1. Jun 8, 2014 / John Deere 318 no spark. #1. Ran the week prior. Does surge (rpm ramp up and down) when running. Wouldn't fire this weekend. Tried starting fluid but still no firing. Checked both spark plugs for spark....nothing. motor is Onan B43G (year 1983). Looking for a list of diagnostics with details for each.It is popping and is backfiring through the carb. I bought some starter spray, and same condition - cranks and backfiring through carb seems to be more. Went to check spark plugs. Turned gas switch off at the left hand side tank selector. Took right side plug out, plugged it back and and put end on a ground, cranked, it sparked.Missing under load is a classic symptom of a secondary ignition issue. This is especially critical with the wasted spark system as both plugs fire in series at the same time.
